The Skype Attack
The Internet telephony giant Skype is set to release a mobile client for iPhone and iPod touch on Tuesday and also announced a BlackBerry client slated for May.
By allowing ‘Skypers’ to make and receive calls via a data connection (instead of the cellular network), the application could take root with Blackberry and iPhone users wanting to sidestep hassles like calling plan overage and long distance fees.
Skype, which is owned by eBay, has been a noticeable latecomer to the App Store, which features several other VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) applications.
The application will allow users to make free VoIP calls to other mobile and desktop Skype accounts, or to place cheap VoIP calls to landlines and mobile phone numbers, albeit only over the Wi-Fi network.
