How To Enable BASIC in C64 Emulator For iPhone

Apple has finally approved the C64 emulator for iPhone developed by Manamio allowing the Commodore 64 and retro games on iPhone.
Initially Apple rejected the app from iTunes store based on the SDK clause specifically prohibiting interpreted or executable code.
“Thank you for submitting C64 1.0 to the App Store. We’ve reviewed C64 1.0 and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because it violates the iPhone SDK Agreement; “3.3.2 An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple’s Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s).”
Apple allowed the app only with BASIC disabled unlike on Windows Mobile where you can transfer any title for your Pocket Commodore 64 and there aren’t any restrictions at all.
How to enable BASIC
On your Jailbroken iPhone, overwrite the following
- nobasicoverlay.png with either overlay2.png or newoverlay_interlaced.png (Portrait mode)
- nobasicoverlay_landscape.png with ls-overlay-skin.png (Landscape)
Enable full keyboard in settings inside the application directory of the game. Then after starting the emulator you’ll be greeted by the familiar BASIC prompt
If the iPhone is not Jailbroken then to enable BASIC, enable ” always show full keyboard” by going to the “Extra” keyboard in portrait mode and then tap on the “Reset” button.
Currently officially only 5 games are available but users can transfer their own games easily. Also other game developers will publish more games for the approved emulator.
