Windows Mobile 6.5 Announced Along With MyPhone Service

Microsoft has announced that latest Windows Mobile 6.5 will hit the market on October 6. The latest Windows Mobile 6.5 boasts a new user experience, improved browsing and a service called My Phone.
The decision of releasing Windows Mobile 6.5 just six months before expected release of Windows Mobile 7 can prove disastrous for Microsoft. The lack of demand, along with freely offered software from heavy hitters Google Inc. and Nokia Corp, puts into question the appeal and business sense of Microsoft’s software, which is already seeing waning support from the handset makers.
In North America, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, Telus and Bell Mobility will sell phones with the updated Windows Mobile 6.5 software. Phone makers including HP, HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung and Toshiba will offer devices.
Microsoft will also formally launch its free My Phone service, which has been in beta. In addition to backing up contacts, calendar, text messages, photos, and other data, the service will also have a “Find My Phone” feature, similar to a paid iPhone service that helps users locate a lost iPhone.
One of the big pushes with the new release is the Windows Marketplace app store. Although Microsoft has long offered tens of thousands of applications, they have been hard to find and download, something Marketplace is designed to address. While the Marketplace will launch with Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft’s Ferguson declined to say how many programs have been submitted or approved thus far.
