Google’s free turn by turn maps navigation app announced on Wednesday is making big GPS giants Tom Tom and Garmin nervous, even sares of navigation device makers sunk Wednesday after Google’s announcement.

The announcement came in conjunction with the launch of Android based Droid smartphone, hinting that the Google Maps Navigation will essentially come with Android 2.0 based handset.

This latest free navigation service for Android phones includes all the features you’d expect in a high-end GPS for an automobile. These include turn-by-turn voice navigation, search by voice, live traffic data, constantly updated maps, and searching along your route.

The Google Maps Navigation will enable drivers to see an upcoming intersection, with the route overlaid onto it. At the end of the trip, a picture of the destination is also displayed. (Nice touch for the chronically lost).

This free service for Android based handset can give some dent to iPhone’s appeal as iPhone users would need to make a decision between staying with Apple or moving to Android.

Rumours about the application have been around for a while, with hints including Google’s steady removal of its reliance on map providers, sourcing more of Google Earth’s maps from information collected by its fleet of Street View cars, and even allowing users to report map errors as well as monitoring user locations to feed traffic information.
