A must have app for travelers as this is an app based on a technology known as OCR or Optical Character Recognition. Simply take a close up picture of any text using iPhone camera and this app will recognize and translate into another language.
This app works even without camera and works like any other translator app where user has to enter the text manually.
The languages this app supports includes:
Albanian, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Portugese, Spanish, Turkish
The hardware requirements are:
- iPhone 3GS or previous generation iPhone with Clarifi case is required.
- iPhone and iPhone 3G users without Clarifi case are limited to translating large text only(1/3″ or bigger), or manual input only.
- iPod Touch users can only use manual input.
- WiFi or cellular connection is required for translation but not for text recognition.
Note: Babelshot only works for small number of text. You can also optionally enter in text manually. The app is $1.99. It apparently only recognizes the Roman alphabet, so the camera feature won’t work with, say, Chinese or Arabic text. In that case, you’ll have to enter the text manually.
