Verizon’s all out offensive will not just stop at Droids but according to reports the company is already in process of offering iPhone to its customers by mid 2010.

The new “hybrid iPhone” or World iPhone will work on both the GSM/UMTS and the CDMA systems, meaning that Apple will be able “to sell a single global handset to all carriers, and specifically to Verizon Wireless in the US.”

Features of “world mode iPhone” includes:

  • A 2.8-inch screen–that is, roughly 20 percent smaller than the screen on the existing iPhone
  • New hybrid UMTS/CDMA chip capable of surfing Verizon’s CDMA network as well as the 3G UMTS networks

Further details of world mode iphone include that the manufacturer will be Pegatron, a subsidiary of Asustek, instead of Foxconn, which is currently the sole-source provider of iPhone hardware.

This news could be bad for AT&T, which has been snubbed by Apple and users alike for poor coverage, dropped calls, delayed MMS support, and lack of tethering. The availability of a Verizon iPhone may cause AT&T buyers to hold off on new purchases until they see what kinds of competitive deals AT&T and Verizon will offer once the iPhone’s exclusivity with AT&T ends next summer and the new “worldmode” iPhone appears.
