Google in a bid to make app development easier for developers has launched a device dashboard that shows the fragmentation of the Android platform.

There’s at least three versions of the Android operating system and increased fragmentation of Google’s mobile OS has been a concern. Data on the dashboard is based on the number of devices that have accessed Android Market with a 14-day period. Developers can use the dashboard information to determine priorities in development of application features.

Google in a blog post wrote: “In summary, Android 1.5, 1.6, and 2.0.1 are the 3 versions of the platform that are deployed in volume. Our goal is to provide you with the tools and information to make it easy for you to target specific versions of the platform or all the versions that are deployed in volume.”

Android with many versions of the software, and more to come, worries developers, who are not interested in having to tweak their applications for all the different versions.
