AntiVirus Ventures Targeting Droids And iPhone
A new security company called Lookout has raised $5.5 million and is planning to roll out security apps for mobile phones in 2010. The investment is done by an investment group led by Khosla Ventures, a prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firm.
As mobile phones are becoming ever more like personal computers, meaning they are also becoming more vulnerable to traditional computer threats like hackers and viruses.
Last month, an Australian student created an iPhone worm that affected jailbroken iPhones. The malicious worm did not cause any damage. To security experts, it suggested that injurious attacks on iPhones are possible. Kaspersky Lab, a Russian antivirus company, has reported a new malicious program that steals money from users of Nokia phones.
The Lookout evolved from Flexilis, a security consulting startup, which in turn was founded by graduates of the University of Southern California. The company is privately testing Windows Mobile, Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone applications, and plans to sell security apps out in 2010. Features include anti-virus and firewall protection from malicious programs, data backup, and the ability to locate and obliterate your phone if it gets lost.
