Cell Phones To Carry Warnings: Cell Phones May Cause Cancer

22 December 2009 One Comment

Cell phones statutorily to carry warnings that they can cause brain cancer. Although there is no consensus among scientists that cell phones are causing cancer and the industry disputes the claim.

Andrea Boland, Democrat House Representative for Maine believes that nearly one million cell phone users in the state should know what the hazards are real as several studies now show that the radiation emitted by cell phones does pose a cancer risk.

The radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phones as they transmit and receive voice and data signals, causes brain tumors- the main suggestion at the center of the issue. The Federal Communications Commission has set a standard for the “specific absorption rate” of radio-frequency energy, but it does not require handset makers to divulge radiation levels.

Under the bill that Boland is recommending, and for which she has been given the permission to bring before legislative leaders next month, manufacturers would have to label phones and their packaging to warn users of the probable link between brain cancer and electromagnetic radiation, and recommend that they keep the device away from the head and body, and especially so in the case of children and pregnant women.
