Over the air Android 2.0.1 firmware update is now available from Verizon for Motorola Droids.

The much awaited update went to a small percentage of handsets yesterday and the update, identified as ESD56 includes, among other things, better battery life, a fix for the camera, and more OS stability.

The Motorola Droid update is based on Google’s release of a software developer kit for Android 2.0.2 on Dec. 6. Verizon also indicated that it is planning to update the Droid Eris to Android 2.0 or 2.1, but hasn’t settled on a time frame for that update.

The firmware update for the Motorola Droid fix is as follows:

  1. OS stability is improved.
  2. Battery life is improved.
  3. Camera auto focus functionality is improved, and time between shots is reduced.
  4. Enhancements for three-way calling.
  5. Audio for incoming calls is improved.
  6. When receiving a call on call waiting, the speakerphone now remains on.
  7. Bluetooth functionality is improved; background echo is eliminated.
  8. Improved Bluetooth phone book transfer of contacts to in-vehicle Bluetooth solutions.
  9. After closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically be removed from the notification panel.
  10. Users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS message is received.
  11. SMS and MMS may now be sent to seven-digit addresses.
  12. Google contact merging has been updated to accommodate seven-digit numbers.
  13. Visual Voice Mail notices now arrive instantaneously.
  14. The corporate calendar widget user interface is updated.
