The latest software updates from Apple for iPhone and iPod Touch brings the current version to 3.1.3.  The updates block many security holes and even bring enhancements to the iPhone experience.

Apple last updates came only five months back and this latest update shows the severity of the security holes which was bothering its users.

The most visible among the changes that come to the  iPhone after updating it to 3.1.3 are:

1. Removed a bug that allowed access to to user data in recovery mode
2. Remove a bug that allowed hacked audio and video files to run malicious code
3. Removed a bug that allowed malicious code to be executed from a remote ftp server
4. Improved the accuracy of the reported battery level on the iPhone 3GS
5. Resolved an issue where third party applications would not launch in some instances
6. Fixed a particular bug where some apps crash while using the Japanese Kana keyboard

The iPhone OS update 3.1.3 comes just after Monday’s iTunes 9.0.3 update, which cures the problem of iTunes forgetting user passwords, and fixes bugs with iPod syncing.

Software developer Joikusoft has announced their latest ‘JoikuSpot for Maemo OS’ which the company is set to publish soon for Nokia N900 users.

JoikuSpot for Maemo OS will turns N900 into a WiFi hotspot. Currently the software is available for Nokia’s Symbian based devices.

Pros:
The N900 can easily be used as a cellular modem for a single device (via USB tethering of Bluetooth’s networking), a main highlight of JoikuSpot is its ability to allow multiple devices to connect to the ‘hotspot’ at the same time. Making it possible for a number of users or devices to share the same connection.

Cons:
Although, on the down side, the use of JoikuSpot eats up more battery than using cellular modem (tethering).

Google Nexus One is an attempt to copy the Apple’s strategy of controlling everything from hardware, software and even supply management. The various news sites have confirmed that Google had handed out prototypes to employees on Friday.

Google Phone Nexus One is a device that combines innovative hardware from HTC with software that runs on Android 2.0. As reported the Google Nexus One is a GSM phone, which means it’ll work on AT&T and T-Mobile but not Verizon or Sprint. In foreign markets like Europe and Asia Google may decide to sell the unlocked version of Nexus One.

The google phone comes with features that includes:

• Web-OS-style previews of all the home screens.
• MicroSD
• Wi-Fi Bluetooth
• 7.2mbps down and 2-MBps up.

If Google really does plan to sell the Nexus One directly to consumers and compete with its customers, it has chosen an interesting way to announce it to the world. Maybe Google is building its own phone to avoid becoming the next Microsoft, doomed by the inferior hardware on which your software company depends.

Motorola’s own Android application store SHOP4APPS is ready and coming soon. The application store is web based and was even made available for a short period of time but was quickly removed by Motorola. A glimpse of this software solutions portal has been caught by  the folks over at AndroidandMe.

SHOP4APPS once live will be available via both Android based handsets and desktop computer but its design makes it obvious that Motorola intended it to be viewed on a phone, with the block text. The applications can be directly purchased and downloaded from mobile clients.

The expected features of Motorola app store includes:

• Apps Store catalog is accessible via your mobile browser, a mobile client, or Motorola Media Link (MML)
• MotoAppstore free Mobile Client. This client allows you to download and install your purchases applications
• MyLocker section – check your download history (name of the application, date of the purchase, version)
• The ability to purchase apps from the desktop site, place them in your MyLocker, and then download it using your handset
• Automatic notification alerts when a new version of an app is available
• The ability to re-download and transfer your apps to a new phone

The site is still in testing phase and the application store isn’t online anymore, but that doesn’t mean it won’t exist in the near future.

American and Australian scientists are developing a software that will allow patients simply to cough into their phone, and it will tell them whether they have cold, flu, pneumonia or other respiratory diseases.

Since the diagnosis is primarily with the sound produced with a cough, the scientists say their software can possibly do the doctor’s job in this case. The research team which has been partly funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have been testing the effectiveness of the software on several dozens of patients with many more tests in the pipeline to improve the software’s reliability.

Suzanne Smith of STAR Analytical Services, the firm behind the research, says: “Why haven’t we been measuring coughs? “It’s the most common symptom when a patient presents, and we are relying on doctors and nurses with good old technology from the 19th century.”

Telegraph reports that the software works only on a computer at present. However, this can be made into an app for smartphones, including the iPhone and Android based handset in later stages.

Samsung mobile platform, named ‘Bada’ will put the world’s second-largest cellphone maker in competition with some of its key technology suppliers such as Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc.

Clouds have nonetheless formed over Symbian as Nokia, the largest proponent of the operating system, has also been linked to dropping the OS in favor of Android and its own Linux based Maemo for upcoming smartphones.

Samsung with Bada will just crowd the market with one more OS and confuse customers already struggling with options made available by Nokia’s maemo, Palm WebOs and Google’s Android.

Samsung on Tuesday launched a Web site aimed at attracting software developers to its proprietary operating system as the company is expected to offer its first bada-based smart phone in the first half of next year.

Bada means ocean in Korean, is an “open mobile platform” which will sit pretty on Samsung phones while letting punters get easy access to apps. In mobile company speak, it means you’ll be able to “enjoy a fun and diverse mobile experience.” It’ll bring fully fledged apps to Samsung’s phones, even if they’re not running traditional smartphone software, such as Android or Windows Mobile.

Steps to improve picture quality:

1) Always make sure the lighting is adequate as camera phones either have no flash or have led flash which is not enough. The more light you have, the sharper the images captured.

2) Cell phone rely on software to do the work of physical shutter and software on cell phones are not very fast and there are some lag between button press and when picture is captured. The time delay of second or more caused by software shutter increases the chance of capturing blur picture because of hand shake. While taking pictures take support from wall or table top to reduce hand shake.

3) Imagine your frame has four lines going through it like a tic-tac-toe board. Put your subject in the center of the screen, use the points where these lines would intersect as bull’s eyes. This adds intensity and balance to shots.

Due to large data storage options, the performance of a cell phone sometimes decreases due to cookies and other temporary files that occupy the memory. In such a case, the best solution is to format your cell phone to keep it in order.
1) Backup all the data and files of your cell phone. Attach a connector cable to one end of the cell phone and plug the other end into a computer. If your phone has a memory card slot, backup the data on the memory card.
2) Download back-up software online for a small fee if your cell phone did not come with the software. Some Pocket PC phones have a backup/restore utility built in to the phone and do not need any additional software.
3) Format your phone by holding down the power button and using a pin or a stylus to press the restore button. This step will erase all data on your phone and will take approximately five to seven minutes. Once the phone has been formatted it will shut down and restart.
4) Turn on the cell phone and follow the on-screen prompts to install the factory settings on the phone. This will free up storage and ensure optimal performance. Install new programs on your formatted cell phone or restore your original data.
